TERRAMAR IS SITGES!!

Although it would appear that the majority of political parties have forgotten it,TERRAMAR IS A NEIGHBOURHOOD IN SITGES, the town’s GREEN LUNG, a neighbourhood that has respected Nature, by conserving its trees, gardens and green areas.

TERRAMAR district was the first GARDEN CITY in continental Europe, an initiative led by FRANCESC ARMENGOL more than a CENTURY ago, and one that became a benchmark in urban planning in Europe.

This SITGES DISTRICT, connected to the town centre by the Passeig Marítim (Waterfront Avenue) for over 100 years and, as such, a background to its beaches, has contributed to making SITGES a world-renowned tourist destination.

TERRAMAR -“LAND AND SEA”-, as originally conceived by MIQUEL UTRILLO, is a neighborhood that is proud that its colonial houses remain one of the symbols of our town and constitute part of its significant architectural value, further enhanced with classical, modernist and avant-garde buildings, all of which coexist in harmony among the private, green gardens and tree-lined streets. All these elements make it very pleasant to walk through the district, especially along the first streets that have -at last- been rehabilitated by initiative of the current Municipal Government, headed by the Lady Mayor.

Of course, pedestrians will still have to be very careful not to trip over the sidewalk tiles forced upwards by the roots of the pine trees or other obstacles that “adorn” most of our streets! For these reasons, the Terramar Proprietors’ Association (APT) wishes to preserve the neighborhood as the lung of our town, so that all our fellow citizens can enjoy a quiet walk, without fear of stumbling into the holes on the sidewalks, and can accompany their children and grandchildren on their bicycles through the Jardins de Terramar (Terramar Gardens), playing  and enjoying the shade in this romantic wonder bequeathed to us by the great artist and designer, Miquel Utrillo, and where, in recent years, the “Jardins de Terramar“ Summer Music Festival has been held, thus increasing the cultural prestige of Sitges year by year.

It is also for these reasons that our Association has sent a questionnaire to all the political parties that are standing in the next municipal elections, requesting them to define their objectives and degree of commitment to issues such as the protection of the “green lung” and the coastline of Sitges, the replacement of trees that have fallen as a result of storms, vehicle mobility, the safety and quality of infrastructures: road surfaces, pavements, street lighting, etc…

In order for the commitment of those who will soon be elected to govern the municipality over the next 4 years to be publicly known to all the inhabitants of Sitges, we wish to let you know through this note in our beloved ECO that the political parties which, to date, have answered our questionnaire, thus acquiring a commitment to our town and our neighborhood, are:

Our Association will be vigilant in its monitoring of the next Municipal Government’s fulfillment of the commitments acquired with respect to Terramar, a neighborhood that contributes significantly to environmental conservation in Sitges and the town’s prestige.
