THE RECENT STORM “GLORY” WREAKS HAVOC IN TERRAMAR
The hurricane winds associated with the recent storm that ravaged Sitges, caused numerous trees in Terramar to fall, especially those on the pavements, but also some in gardens and in the public park known as “Jardins de Terramar“. The species that proved most vulnerable were pines and cypresses. Unfortunately, a large number of the huge, almost centenary pines so characteristic of the neighbourhood were uprooted, pulling up sections of the already badly damaged pavements. Most fell on the roadways, although the roofs of some houses were also damaged.
In recent years, pruning of street trees has been somewhat neglected and this certainly rendered them more vulnerable. In this respect, it is very important for the residents who have trees in their gardens or on plots belonging to them to undertake preventive pruning regularly, in order to avoid or limit damage in the case of storms such as this recent one.
Aware of the antiquity of many of the pine trees in Terramar and the multiple damages that they have caused on the streets and pavements over the years, the Local Government elected spring 2019 had already begun to rethink and redesign the street vegetation. The effects of “Gloria” will no doubt push the drafting of the corresponding project forward and the APT hopes to make an active and constructive contribution to the process by collaborating with the Town Council.
