IMPROVEMENT IN THE RUBBISH COLLECTION AND STREET CLEANING SERVICES
In the framework of the particiation process, “T’hi sumes?” (“Won’t you join in?”), the Local Government announced significant changes in the operation of municipal cleaning services and rubbish collection. Selective collection in Sitges currently amounts to only 30% of the total, when the EU objective doubles this figure. Municipal target have been set at 50% for 2020 and 55% for 2025. In order to achieve these goals, the implementation of significant improvements began in November and will be fully effective within four months.
New measures:
- Street cleaning equipment units have been increased from 4 to 9;
• Part-time working hours have been extended to full-day, this making higher frequencies of service possible;
• The distribution of recycling bins has been improved;
• Recycling bins will be cleaned on site, using a “cleaning tunnel” truck;
• Facilities to deposit ALL the different types of rubbish in one place have been increased;
• A mobile “mini-recycling-depot” (a van that circulates to pick up small objects -batteries, electronic devices, etc.- that should be taken to the main depot) has begun to circulate;
• Twelve collection points for used oil are being installed;
• The small waste bins around the town will be repainted;
• A collection service for private gardens (for grass and shrub cuttings) will be set in place (large baskets will be distributed by the Town Council);
• The large junk and furniture collection service will continue to operate as usual (by appointment, calling 938947525);
• A “GREEN LINE” on the City Council website will be set up for citizens to notify specific problems or make suggestions.
However, the effectiveness of all these services will also eventually depend on CITIZEN COLLABORATION. Obviously, among these measures, there are some that are undoubtedly important in the Terramar district and especially that referring to the collection of garden cuttings. Hence, the APT encourages and requests the collaboration of all residents.
